Welcome to Arkösund

Arkösund is a picturesque turn of the century idyll located on the south side of the entrance to Bråviken where the islands of the Östgöta archipelago are to be seen just beyond the coastline. This community is the hub for all those travelling out to the islands using either their own boats or enjoying a cruise with the Skärgårdslinjen.

The inner bay of Bråviken attracts many visitors to the Kolmården Zoo and Safari Park situated on the northern coastline and to the nature reserve of Svensksundsviken on the south side. But it is from Arkösund that the archipelago can be best enjoyed in all its glory. Amenities include fuel for the boats, ice cream parlour, handicrafts and a lively community spirit. The jetty offers the discerning visitor the choice of smoked or fresh fish and from the hotel veranda guests can wonder at the view of the harbour whilst enjoying freshly caught and prepared fillet of perch.

Enjoy a wander around Kvarnberget and admire the boats tied up to the jetties or take a stroll past a small, secluded swimming area called Badholmarna and admire the magnificent view over the open sea. South of Arkösund the archipelago displays its many islands like a long string of pearls and Lönshuvud offers an equally outstanding view of the archipelago outside Söderköping.

Many boats begin their journey here en route to Söderköping and Göta Kanal. The first lock is located at Mem and the canal continues on for a further 190 km before reaching Sjötorp in the county of Västergötland.

The Östgöta Archipelago

The wonderful memories we have of a warm, happy, summers' day, with the smells, experiences and sea salt from the archipelago are easily recalled when we are back in our everyday lives.

The archipelago of Östergötland provides magnificent scenery. The delightful natural harbours with their easy access offering wonderful fishing opportunities are so restful and after a good nights sleep in one of the small family-run hotels or cottages the days seem to roll into one.

As the sun is slowly setting why not enjoy a meal followed by a dance on the jetty or maybe rent a sea kayak and experience the many islands and islets which make up the archipelago. The islands offer so many opportunities, including riding Icelandic horses and provide wonderful adventures for the whole family.

If you don't have your own boat then take a tour with the Skärgårdslinjen around the islands. The boats provide services throughout the archipelago during the summer months and at other times offer taxi and charter services on a private basis to suit your own timetable.

The Arkösund, Sankt Anna and Gryt archipelagos are thriving, active and farming communities all year round and warmly welcome visitors to their islands. Once the ice has formed and settled, why not try your hand at skating from island to island to mainland using long-distance skates or book a ride on a hovercraft and tour the archipelago in style.
